A DAY OF GOLF AT RICCARTON
The Club's Annual golf outing .

Another year, another fine day for our annual club golf outing.
This year to Hamilton, (Riccarton) to give it its proper title.
As we gathered in the lounge awaiting the announcement of the teams
most of the talk was as usual on the weather, would it rain,
were we going to be lucky? Even the farmers amongst us weren’t sure!
Well we needn’t have worried as the organiser this year, Ali T
or as most know her Alison Taylor, had been praying and her prayers
were answered with a beautiful dry blustery afternoon
ideal for sorting out the good golfers from the average.
Lockhart read out the teams and off we set to tame the course…..
I’m sure that’s what Archie McFarlane said!
Janey had organised her motorised buggy but hadn’t considered
she would have a female rally driver in her team.
All teams got away fine with even Willie Craig
driving past the Ladies tee and no need to drop his trousers!
As I was concentrating on keeping my head down,
especially when David Lawson was teeing off,
I didn’t see a lot of what was going on with the other teams.
There were tales of George Strang’s Air Tee shot on the first tee,
Janey McFarlane’s approach shot to the last, where she found her ball
up against the clubhouse with a near impossible shot back to the green.
David Lawson managing to hit his bunker shot twice
over his head and back to his feet quite a feat etc, etc.

It was good to see some fresh blood taking part this year in the form
of Craig Lambie, Renee Murray, and our president Willie Craig.
I hope they all enjoyed the experience,
although by the look on Willies face at times I’m not so sure.
Not golfing, but taking a great interest in proceedings were
Helen Drummond and George Brown. It was good to have you around
and hope you both may be able to take part next year.

Now enough of the preamble, you want to know the result!!
Nearest the pin and the only one to land on the green was Lockhart Steele.
Shame he got robbed of his prize, needs must!
Last but not least were...
Archie McFarlane, Craig Lambie and Janet Leiper
Runners up were...
George Strang, Margaret Brown and Willie Craig

And the Kings Cup winners were...
David Lawson, Alison Taylor and Willie King (yes me).

As was mentioned the organiser and helpers have to be commended
for making it a great close competition
with only 9 points between first team and last,
and only 2 points between winners and runner up.
I also thought the hidden hole prizes added to the day.

I can confirm the Tea was great,
but was intrigued to watch David Lawson
mop up three sweets (Gannet),
you could have waited till Janey had had her fill!
Ali T was in at least one bunker on each hole so much so
I was thinking of getting her a large Sandyman Port
for her after dinner drink!
The banter as usual was noisy,
a sign I always think means things are going well.
I have a raft of Photos which I will send to the Web master.
Thanks again to those who helped make the day such a success
and hope to see even more players taking part next year.
Willie King
